Taylorsville vs. Alta

Hot tempers and powerful footwork were the two main qualities both Taylorsville and Alta had during the soccer game on Friday May 2 at Alta.  Both teams did excellent work, but Alta proved to be on top of their game with the final score reaching 6-1.

During the first half of the game, Taylorsville couldn’t keep up with Alta.  They scored four goals within the first forty minute time period, leaving us in the dust.  Although, right after half time, senior Luis Almonacid kicked in a goal for Taylorsville.  Alta caught up, and scored two more goals to wrap up the heated game against Taylorsville.

Mulholland receives Medal of Heroism

On Saturday March 29, 2008 Junior Matthew Mulholland received the Medal of Heroism for saving a man’s life. Matt is a member of the THS JROTC and is a Cadet Captain.

On a snowy day in December 2007, Matt was shoveling snow in his front yard when he heard someone cry, “Call 911! Call 911!” Matt found his neighbor, Bill Cross, down with an apparent heart attack several homes away. He immediately used his CPR skills that he had recently learned in training with the Murray Fire Dept.

Matt’s quick response to the call for help and use of skill is credited by medical personnel as the sole reason that Cross was able to recover from the heart attack. Subsequently, Matt was awarded the Medal of Heroism from the United States Army Cadet Command.

The Medal of Heroism is a rare and impressive achievement. Lieutenant Colonel Charles Horton said he has “not seen it in 14 years at Taylorsville High School.”

There to present Matt’s medal was Lieutenant Colonel Stanfield from the University of Utah ROTC. Bill Cross and his wife were also in attendance to honor Matt for his service.

To sum up the message of the ceremony, Lt. Col. Horton gave all attending Cadets this advice, “Please do not fail to respond to a call for life.”

Softball vs. Jordan @ Taylorsville

The lady Warriors played a good game against Jordan today on their home field. Senior Heather Gardner, was the starting pitcher for Taylorsville. Gardner pitched a good five innings until coach Kaelin replaced her with our other senior pitcher, Ashlee Moore. Her job was cut short when Katie, the Freshman pitcher, finished off the game in the seventh inning.

The Beetdiggers couldn’t seem to keep up with Taylorsville as they only scored two runs to Taylorsville’s nine. The homerun hit for today goes to junior Brita Noble.

The Warriors are defending their state championship not just with the talent, but with their drive and dedication. It’s easy to see the team unity and the passion that they all have for the game.

SBO elections

In past years, students running for student body officers have had to compete with their peers. This year is different. Monica Walker, Communications Coordinator, said that not as many students are running and some don’t even have competition.

Marie Taylor, Brice Natter, Colton Harton, and Jessica Herrin are the only ones running under their categories, but they still show all the campaign efforts of candidates like Megan Pratt, Keely Kirby, Valorie Barber, and Brittney Slade who have to fight for their votes.

This year’s candidates all seem happy to be running and seem excited to be put into office. The candidates don’t agree on everything and are all very unique, but they do share one goal, “We want to get you guys involved, especially next year,” said Gabbi Ricco.

Megan Pratt, who is running for President, talked highly of her opponent Keely Kirby, “She is more in to sports than I am, while she is busy multitasking with track and everything I am at home doing homework.”

During English classes, the candidates had the opportunity to talk to students and answer any questions that they had. The candidates were split into two teams: Toy Story and Star Wars. Each team dressed up according to their themes. The silly costumes didn’t distract the candidates from the serious questions students had. They not only talk about unity, but making a difference in the schools. ” This is high school, this is what you’re going to take with you,” said Megan.

Voting is going on right now in the commons area. On Friday the 4th an assembly will be held to announce those who will be the student body officers of the 2008-2009 school year.

San Diego

The Baseball team is back. After spending days in the hot sun of San Diego and playing in the tournament, they came home victorious- winning three out of four games.

The baseball team went to San Diego for practice, and the first season game is this Friday, March 28th.

Softball

Tuesday March 25, 2008

Taylorsville Warriors Softball team played Copperhills. The weather was chilly and warm in turn. Half the time the crowd shivered, the other half the right sides of their faces were warmed by the sun. During the first inning Senior Cyd Allen hit a home run, leaving the score 4-2 Taylorsville.

The Warriors led by two points at the bottom of the second inning, and the score stayed the same until the fourth inning, which ended 9-5 Taylorsville.

During the sixth inning Cyd slammed another home run, and raised the score to 11-5 Taylorsville. The game ended at the bottom of the seventh inning.

Soccer- THS vs. Judge

Today, March 25, at four o’ clock the Taylorsville varsity boys battled Judge Memorial on the soccer field.  Tempers were sky rocketing while the boys beat Judge 2-0 in the afternoon sunlight.  It started out as a regular soccer game with one goal in mind:  getting the soccer ball in the net.

The first half of the varsity game was pretty basic, just trying to get the ball down the field into scoring position.  Towards the end of the first half, senior Derek Jensen scored a goal while Judge’s keeper knelt down in agony.

The second half of the game started out pretty well, with good ball control allowing the team members to weave in and out of the Judge players.  While Judge played sufficient offense and defense, they were no match to our Warriors.  With their good teamwork and communication skills, the Warriors continued to dominate.  Senior Derek Jensen later scored a second goal with the assistance of junior Tyson Taylor.

With the right amount of skill and teamwork, anything is possible on the soccer field.

School calendar survey

Granite School District recently sent out a survey to parents concerning a much-discussed topic of late, one which could significantly impact students in the future. The survey asks parents to choose their preference of four different school calendars.

Each option basically describes when the year would begin and end, the length of fall, winter, and spring breaks, and how many end of term days there would be. The first choice is the current practice at our school. The second differs in that the academic year would begin right after Labor Day and end in the middle of June. Option three would have school starting the third or fourth week in August and ending the second week of June, with a two-week long winter recess and a full week of spring break. The last option is nearly the opposite of the third; it would extend summer vacation, as school would start after Labor Day and end before Memorial Day, but there would be considerably fewer days off from school during the year.

The outcome of this survey won’t have an effect until the 2009-2010 school year, so seniors and juniors have no need to worry. Sophomores and below, however, will have to live with whatever selection is made, so they might want to voice their thoughts to their parents.

Soccer team wins a close game

The soccer team played a great game against Kearns High on Tuesday March 18. It was a close call at a no score game until the last few minutes when we scored our first and only goal. Right after this, when the crowd had settled back in to the game, Kearns almost got a goal but our amazing goalie blocked it. However,  Kearns wasn’t done and took another chance two seconds later and hit the top bar. Therefore, we win a game good game with a score of one to zero. Good job team!

If you don’t have anything to do and there is a soccer game going on I would strongly suggest going to one, they are very exciting.
